Valcigolera Freeride Sanctuary

From the breath-taking steep slopes of Cima Tognola to the woods of Tognola Uno allowing off-piste skiing even in conditions of moderate avalanche risk, you will be able to draw your line in the Dolomites after a heavy snowfall.

Freeriding in San Martino di Castrozza – Passo Rolle and in the Primiero valley is regulated by special norms issued at the beginning of the season by the Mayors and the Local Avalanche Commission. These bodies, in collaboration with lift operators, have identified certain areas with potential avalanches that if triggered, may involve slopes and their users. Within these areas highlighted in yellow on the map at the lift departure station, off-piste skiing is therefore, prohibited.

The practice of freeride skiing is permitted throughout the municipal territory, as long as skiers are aware that they are responsible for themselves and are equipped with ARTVA, a shovel and a probe, in compliance with rules dictated by common sense and the rules of freeride skiing.

RESPECT YOURSELF

Freeride skiing is tiring and demanding; your physical fitness must be optimal and in line with the difficulty of the chosen route. Never exceed your limits.

RESPECT OTHERS

Never overestimate yourself. Do not endanger the safety of others with manoeuvres that could be dangerous.

EQUIPMENTS

Equip yourself with all necessary equipment: ARTVA, shovel, probe, mobile phone, helmet and a map if necessary.

PRECAUTIONS FOR FREERIDING

Before each outing make sure to always read the avalanche and weather bulletins carefully. The ski lift staff, if asked, will be able to advise you on the risk status of the freeride area and the operating hours of the lifts.

Two people are better! Never venture on off-piste alone: no one will be able to help you, raise the alarm and report your location in the event of an accident. It may happen that there is no or insufficient telephone coverage in the mountains.

In case of need, call 112 and stay put while waiting for help.

Evaluate and plan your route carefully and do not follow unknown tracks: remember that in the event of further movement there are no signs to guide you.
